Wireless ResNet Configuration for Windows XP 

Click Internet Explorer.  If you have a connection, you should be directed to a page titled “Cougar ResNet Authentication”.  If you reach this page, you have a connection to the network and everything is configured correctly.  You do NOT have to continue any further in this document.  Please proceed directly to the instructions titled “Instructions for Accessing ResNet”. 

If you did not reach the “Cougar ResNet Authentication” page, please follow the instructions below.

1)       From the Start menu, select Control Panel and then click Network and Internet Connections.

2)       Then click Network Connections.

The Network Connections screen should look similar to the one below:

3)       If Wireless Network Connection is disabled, right click on it and select Enable.

4)       If Wireless Network Connection had to be enabled, try opening Internet Explorer again.

5)       If you get a connection, proceed directly to the instructions titled “Instructions for Accessing ResNet”.  If you still do not have a connection, proceed to step 6. 

Note for laptop users:  If “Not connected” is shown below Wireless Network Connection, make sure the wireless switch on your laptop is turned on.  Many laptops have a switch on the front or side of the computer that turns your wireless signal on and off.  Make sure it is turned on.  Some computers also have a function key combination to turn the signal on and off.  Check the information that came with your computer for details on locating the wireless switch or function key combination. 

6)       Right click the Wireless Network Connection icon and select Properties from the menu. 

 

7)       Select the Wireless Networks tab.

8)       Click the Add… button.

9)       In the Network Name (SSID) field, type “resnet” as shown above.  Make sure “Open” is selected in the Network Authentication field and “Disabled” is selected in the Data Encryption field.  Then click the OK button.

10)    In the Preferred networks: box is a list of networks that you have connected to in the past. Make sure that “resnet” is the first one listed in this box.

11)    Click the Advanced button.  When the box opens select the option that says Access point (infrastructure) networks only.  Then click Close.

12)    Click on the General tab on the screen shown above.

13)    Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.

14)    Make sure Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are both selected.

15)    Click OK, then click OK on the previous window.

16)   Click Internet Explorer.  If you reach the page titled “Cougar ResNet Authentication”, you have a connection.  Please proceed to the document titled “Instructions for Accessing ResNet”.
